Naotaka Hiro, Untitled (Interior), 2022

Naotaka Hiro (b. 1972, Osaka, Japan; lives and works in Los Angeles, California) explores the limits and unknowability of his own body through painting, drawing, sculpture, and video. His work charts the tensions between subjectivity and objectivity as he works on his surfaces from above and below, inside and outside.

Hiro received his BA from University of California, Los Angeles, in 1997 and his MFA from California Institute of the Arts in 2000. Hiro’s work has been exhibited at MOCA, Los Angeles; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and Centre d’Art Contemporain, La Ferme du Buisson, France. Hiro has had solo exhibitions at Herald Street, London; The Box, Los Angeles; and Misako & Rosen, Tokyo, among others.

His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California; Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minnesota; National Museum of Art, Osaka, Japan; Sammlung Goetz, Munich, Germany; and many more.
